Overview

Uncover the true soul of Bhutan on this richly layered 7-day adventure. Starting in Paro and flowing through Thimphu's vibrant capital scene, the journey leads into the serene glacial valley of Phobjikha — winter sanctuary of the endangered black-necked crane. Travel onward to Punakha, where ancient fortress-monasteries stand guard over turquoise rivers, before returning to Paro for the crowning hike to Tiger's Nest. Every valley crossed and temple visited adds another thread to an unforgettable tapestry of culture, nature, spirituality, and genuine Himalayan warmth.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Arrive at Paro Airport and meet your guide for the scenic drive to Thimphu. Along the way, stop at the 14th-century Tachog Lhakhang, built by the legendary Iron Bridge Builder, and cross the historic hand-forged chain bridge spanning the Paro River. Soak in gentle valley views dotted with traditional farmhouses as you ease into your Bhutan journey.

Spend a full day exploring Bhutan's charming capital. Stand before the towering 51-metre Buddha Dordenma statue overlooking the valley, then visit the Memorial Chorten where locals perform daily circumambulations. Tour Tashichho Dzong, seat of the King's throne room, and the Folk Heritage Museum for a window into rural Bhutanese life. Receive blessings at the centuries-old Changangkha Lhakhang, and browse the colourful Centenary Farmers Market and handicrafts bazaar.

Travel through mountains and dense forest to the serene glacial bowl of Phobjikha. Pause at Dochula Pass for panoramic Himalayan views amid 108 whitewashed chortens honouring Bhutanese soldiers. Descend into the valley and visit Gangtey Monastery, an important Nyingmapa hilltop temple, then stroll the gentle Gangtey Nature Trail through farmlands and wetlands — winter habitat of the endangered black-necked crane.

Enjoy a relaxed morning before driving to Punakha, Bhutan's ancient winter capital. Optionally visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre to learn about the valley's conservation work. In Punakha, explore the magnificent Punakha Dzong — a fortress-monastery at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. If time allows, walk across one of Bhutan's longest suspension bridges for sweeping valley views.
