Day-by-Day Itinerary
Land at Paro International Airport amid dramatic mountain scenery. Meet your guide and drive to Thimphu (55 km, ~1 hr 15 min), crossing the prayer-flag-draped Iron Chain Bridge and pausing at riverside villages along the way. Settle into your hotel and acclimatise to the gentle pace of the Himalayan kingdom.
A full day discovering the cultural soul of Bhutan's capital. Visit Trashi Chhoe Dzong, the imposing seat of government, then walk to Zilukha Nunnery and the monastic school at Dechen Phodrang for a glimpse of daily religious life. Explore the National Textile Museum, browse the weekend Centenary Farmers Market, and end with a visit to the traditional paper-making factory to watch artisans craft Deh-sho paper by hand.
Cross the stunning Dochula Pass (3,100 m) with its 108 memorial chortens and sweeping Himalayan panoramas. Descend through rhododendron forests to the wide-open Phobjikha Valley at 2,900 m. Visit the hilltop Gangtey Goemba monastery and the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre, where conservation efforts protect these majestic winter visitors. Enjoy the valley's profound stillness.
Walk the beloved Phobjikha Nature Trail (4-5 km, ~2 hrs), a gentle path winding through meadows, farmlands, and wetlands with views of the valley floor. After lunch, drive to Punakha (80 km, ~2.5 hrs). Visit Chimi Lhakhang, the revered fertility temple, and conclude the day at the magnificent Punakha Dzong, dramatically set where two rivers converge.
Begin with the relaxed Kabesa Village Walk (3-4 km), experiencing rural Bhutanese life among rice paddies and farmsteads. Then hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten (4 km round-trip, ~2-3 hrs), a beautiful hilltop stupa offering sweeping valley views. Cross one of Bhutan's longest suspension bridges, festooned with colourful prayer flags, for a memorable photo stop.
Drive back to Paro (125 km, ~4.5 hrs) with a second chance at Himalayan vistas from Dochula Pass. Along the way, stop at Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress in Bhutan and a living centre of traditional learning. Arrive in Paro in time for a relaxed evening at leisure — the perfect prelude to tomorrow's iconic hike.
Set out on the legendary trek to Taktsang Monastery (6-7 km round-trip, 4-5 hrs), Bhutan's spiritual crown jewel clinging to a cliff at 3,120 m. Wind through pine forest, past prayer wheels and sacred rock paintings, to reach the monastery complex where Guru Rinpoche once meditated. The trail, the views, and the atmosphere combine for one of the most rewarding experiences in all of Asia.
Transfer to Paro Airport for your onward flight. Say goodbye to your guide and driver, carrying home memories of peaceful valleys, sacred hikes, and the warm hospitality that defines the kingdom of Bhutan.
